McAir Aviation Customers,

First, we'd like to start off by saying our hearts and prayers go out to those impacted by the devastating fires in Boulder County last week. We stand united with the airport, county, and our community to help everyone get through this together. We wanted to write to give everyone further guidance on the recent events and the issuance of the TFR near the BJC airport as we will resume normal business hours tomorrow January 3, 2022.

There are a few things we would like to emphasize:

  • PIC decision - Number one and foremost we need to remember and exercise PIC decision making.  The PIC has the final authority of flight no matter what.  If you are at all uncomfortable with flying in close proximity of the TFR please don't hesitate to make the decision to not fly.  Also if there any concerns with weather and not being able to return to BJC you can make the decision to fly or not.  If you choose to fly and the weather changes make a good PIC decision to divert to an airport that suites your personal limitations.  Recommended airports for diversions would be EIK(Erie) or LMO(Longmont). I would avoid diverting to BDU(Boulder).   With that in mind you have the authority to divert to any airport that you determine safe.
  • Solo flights - McAir will not allow solo flights in or out of BJC airport for private pilot and student pilot applicants until the TFR had been lifted.  Other arrangements for solo flights can be made and we can handle that with each specific instructor and applicant as those situations come up. Please prepare to fly with a CFI during the TFR.
  • Check rides - Check rides will also need to be handled case by case. We are recommending that most check ride flights should not depart or arrive out of BJC. We can handle each check ride with the Instructor, DPE and applicant to make sure everyone is comfortable with the flight. The biggest thing is making sure there is communication between everyone involved.

This is an ever-changing situation and we do not have all the answers. We need to take this day by day and adjust as things change. Make sure to stay up to date with current TFR status and cancel flights the morning of, if you so choose (like a weather event). I would like the emphasize again the importance PIC decision making, we are all professionals and need to use all available information that we have access to before each flight just like we do before every other flight that we go on.  Make the best and safest decision for you with safety in mind.

If anyone has any questions or concerns don't hesitate to reach out.
