McAir Aviation is proud to celebrate the success of its instructors and graduates as they advance throughout the aviation industry. After serving as a Certified Flight Instructor at McAir Aviation, Jay Martin continued his professional pilot journey and is now flying for Envoy Airlines. He recently shared what inspired him to pursue aviation, how instructing shaped his career, and his advice for aspiring airline pilots.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in aviation and become a pilot?
A: I fell in love with aviation during family trips when I was in elementary school. I knew I wanted a career in aviation after earning the Aviation Merit Badge in Boy Scouts during high school. After college, I spent eight years working as an IT project manager before finally taking my first flight lesson. The pandemic slowed my progress, but I landed my first flying job as a McAir Aviation CFI in 2022. There were a couple of time-building stops along the way to the airlines, but I wouldn't trade the journey for anything.
Q: What was your experience like as a Certified Flight Instructor at McAir Aviation, and what did you enjoy most about instructing?
A: I had a great experience working at McAir. I made some incredible friends and still keep in touch with many of my former students. The professional development opportunities I received through airline partnerships were fantastic and gave me a significant advantage when I walked into my first day of airline training.
As an instructor, I loved the "light bulb" moments when concepts finally clicked for students. I also enjoyed the conversations we had about life and interests outside of flying during long cross-country flights, and, of course, getting to supervise first solo flights was always special.
Q: How did your time as a CFI help prepare you for the transition to the airlines?
A: The instructor role is not all that different from serving as the pilot monitoring on an Embraer 175 flight deck. In both situations, you're mentally flying the aircraft to ensure the student—or, in my current role, the captain—is making the airplane go where and do what it's supposed to. That experience helped me develop situational awareness, communication skills, and the ability to think ahead of the aircraft, all of which are critical in airline operations.
Q: What does joining Envoy Airlines mean to you at this stage in your career?
A: Envoy is a fantastic place to begin a career as both a jet and airline pilot. One consistent theme I've experienced since walking through the door for my interview is that everyone is extraordinarily kind, wants you to succeed, and is willing to go out of their way to help. The culture encourages pilots to ask questions, stay curious, and continuously learn. From day one, you're being prepared for long-term success and future opportunities in the industry.
Q: What advice would you give to current students or CFIs working toward an airline career?
A: The path to the right seat of a jet is rarely linear. At some point, you'll likely face setbacks in training, time-building, or your overall career progression. That's why it's important to genuinely love flying—the day-to-day experience of being in the cockpit helps smooth out some of the bumps along the way. If you're only pursuing aviation because of what life might look like as a major airline captain 20 years from now, this career may become challenging when obstacles arise. Focus on enjoying the journey and embracing every stage of your development. And remember—we GET to do this!
